I get roles because of my talent: Kalidas
He is gladly awaiting the release of Oru Pakka Kathai
Actor Jayaram’s love for percussion is well known as he makes it a point to regularly participate in chenda melams held throughout the state. Now, recounting his experiences during his recent trip to the US along with his father’s troupe, Kalidas reveals he too is an enthusiast of musical instruments.
“It was a great trip. We were back on our way after performing the first ever Indian show in this small town in Mexican border, McAllen. Everyone was happy with the good response from the crowd. During the journey, suddenly we had a thought. What if we perform on the street with whatever instruments we had with us! It was a spur-of-the-moment decision.”
“We started doing it as a fun way to pass time, but, once we started playing, we started getting a huge amount of mone
He adds, “I have not had any professional training in musical instruments, but I can pretty much play all the instruments at a basic level. I’m especially good with percussion instruments. Since my father is also a percussionist, I got acquainted with the instrument from a very young age.”
The young actor is now awaiting the release of his debut movie as the hero Oru Pakka Kathai. “I have a few other big projects in Tamil and Malayalam as well. My next project would possibly be a Tamil film under the banner of Shivaji Films. I have always been a Chennai boy as I spent most of my time here as a child. So getting a lot of appreciation from the Tamil industry feels good. In fact, I even got a call from Rajkumar Hirani, the director of 3 Idiots, after he watched the Cadbury’s ad to appreciate me! That was a great feeling. Now I’m hearing that the ad is going to be telecast on a global level! I never expected such positive feedback and, being a new comer, it feels good to get so much support,” he says.
Being the son of actor Jayaram and former actress Parvathy, and even with two exceptional roles as child actor — one winning him the National Award — does the industry still consider him a newbie? “Of course! That way, the industry is uncompromising. For example, I had to go through audition to get my roles in both the chocolate ad and for my debut film despite them knowing who my parents were. It is reassuring to know that I get roles because of my talent. Even though I’m not an experienced actor, I know that there will be a lot of people to pull you down in the industry and a lot of your projects wouldn’t work out. But in the end, if you mind your own business, do justice to your work and choose from the roles that come your way carefully, you can make it in films,” says Kalidas with determination.
