Film industry is uncompromising: Kalidas

Kalidas, who is awaiting his debut in Kollywood talks about his love for music
Being the son of actor Jayaram and former actress Parvathy, and even with two exceptional roles as child actor — one winning him the National Award — does the industry still consider Kalidas a newbie? “Of course! The industry is uncompromising. I had to go through audition to get my roles in both the chocolate ad and for my debut film despite them knowing who my parents were. It is reassuring to know that I get roles because of my talent,” says Kalidas with determination.
Kalidas shares about his recent trip to the USA with his father, actor Jayaram and his music troupe. “It was a great trip. We were back on our way after performing the first ever Indian show in this small town in Mexican border, McAllen. During the journey, an idea struck us — an impromptu performance. It was a spur-of-the-moment decision and we performed with the instruments on hand. It started as a fun thing, but once we started playing, we started getting a huge amount of money from the onlookers. It was unbelievable,” exclaims Kalidas and adds, “I have not had any professional training in musical instruments, but I can pretty much play all the instruments at a basic level. I’m especially good with percussions. Since my father is also a percussionist, I got acquainted with the instrument from a very young age.”
The young actor is now awaiting the release of his debut movie as the lead of Oru Pakka Kathai. “I have always been a Chennai boy as I spent most of my time here as a child. So getting appreciation from the Tamil industry feels good. In fact, I even got a call from Rajkumar Hirani, the director of 3 Idiots, after he watched the Cadbury’s ad to appreciate me!” he says.
