Have a 'bloody' good time
Chennai is going absolutely wacky for Halloween this time
What was once a Western concept, has gained populairty among namma jananga this time around. The dynamics of celebrating Halloween in the city has seen a vibrant jump, and how! Be it the Chennai Cosplayers Convention featuring a bevy of beauties at their scary best throwing a huge party, the crazy Halloween Dubsmashes that have become a rage among youngsters, or the nightlife scene that has quadrupled, with almost every nightclub hosting a Halloween bash this weekend.
Well, not just that — the effect has even trickled down to kids this time, as they are actively participating by donning their favourite superhero or cartoon character costumes. For contemporary dancer Preethi Ravikumar, it’s going to be a spooky date with her students at the dance studio.
“Though Halloween is a borrowed ritual, with shrinking global borders, there is a lot of cultural exchange. This event has become an excuse to get together and celebrate and pay tribute to the dead and spread some joy. I am celebrating with my dance students, who are all children below 15. This time, we are all dressing up as witches, vampires and in Ghostbuster themes. The Vampire Diaries has caught the fancy of kids this time. We have decked up the studio with spooky lights and music, and will be dancing to the tunes of Kevin Federline’s music,” she explains.
Model Ratikha Venugopal, who founded the Chennai’s Cosplayers Convention along with Gowrishankar Siva, has also organised a party. The group has over 600 followers on their Facebook page, in the last eight months.
“The Cosplayer Community has initiated this. Chennai, when compared to Delhi, Mumbai or Bengaluru is a city that is assumed to be little shy. But, now we are breaking the myth slowly, and coming together for this! Over 25 cosplayers will be dressed in spooky costumes, and will have snacks like zombie fingers, eyeballs and bloody drinks. Halloween has beocome a glamorous, sexy occasion and we plan to make the most of it,” she grins.
Though Chennaiites don’t need a reason to party, Halloween is just another excuse. Popular DJ, Kishy said that this time the city is definitely partying hard. “The party last year was definitely low key with a limited crowd. I am playing at Pasha this time and the numbers have spiked up. It’s going to be a mad party and I will be playing electronic and commercial music. Apart from this, many national and international artists will also be performing in the city,” he shares.
Not just hotels, even various stores in the city are hit by the Halloween wave. Like, Samyukta Venkatachalam, founder of the store House of Chase, who has transformed her store into a spooky affair. “We are having a Halloween bash, for which we have put up eerie décor, have listed down very tasteful music, have also organised several games and stuff. We are also having prizes for the best costume,” she says.
