Woman, son accuse Shettar’s brother of land grab, try to commit suicide
They are undergoing treatment at KIMS hospital
Hubballi: A woman and her son tried to commit suicide by consuming poison at the tahsildar office here on Friday in connection with an alleged land grab case against Pradeep Shettar, the brother of Opposition leader and former Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar. The mother, Sayeeda Shaikh, and son, Jaffar Shaikh, are undergoing treatment at KIMS hospital.
They claimed that the Hubballi suburban police have refused to lodge a complaint against Shettar and two BJP leaders who prompted them to make an attempt to end their lives.
The family members claimed that they had been engaged in agriculture on 9.14 acres of land bearing survey No. 106 in Tarihal industrial area of Hubballi taluk.
The price of the land has skyrocketed after the government took up the project to upgrade the nearby airport. The woman claimed that she had approached the BJP leader to resolve the land dispute in the family after the death of her father-in-law in 2007. She alleged that she had paid '9 lakh to Pradeep Shettar to settle the dispute.
Later, the BJP leader reportedly returned the money to the woman by taking the signature of the family members on bond paper. But, the woman claimed that she realized the name in the title deed of the land had changed in 2010 and launched several protests since then. She also said that the names of BJP leader Harsha Pradeep Shettar said that it was a conspiracy hatched against him as the council elections are round the corner.
