Penning lyrics for tunes is more comfortable: Vinayak Sasikumar

Lyricist Vinayak Sasikumar’s Lord Livingstone 7000 Kandi is earning widespread appreciation
Vinayak Sasikumar, who started his lyrics writing career in Mollywood with Guinness Pakru’s debut movie Kuttiyum Kolum, says his associations with both Anil Radhakrishnan Menon and Rex Vijayan have brought out some of his best and most popular works to date.
Vinayak was part of all three Anil Radhakrishnan Menon films and his recent work in Lord Livingstone 7000 Kandi has been garnering much attention.
“Anil ettan prefers to work with the same team as much as possible in all his projects to maintain the comfort levels and so, this time too, he approached me for writing the lyrics for Lord Livingstone.”
“By then, the movie had already been shot and the music was decided upon and I was told to write something that would fit into that scheme. The songs featured people belonging to both our normal community as well as the tribal community. So it had to be written in a way in which the language styles of both communities could fit it in. It was a fun thing to work on that song. The second song was an introduction for all the characters in the film. This was also the third time I was working with both Anil ettan as well as Rex as I had worked with Rex for Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi too,” says Vinayak.
Vinayak adds that writing lyrics for an already set tune is the norm for films now. “I have worked on eight films till now and in all these films I was given the music and asked to write lyrics that fit into that tune. Since I have some knowledge in music because of being trained in piano, I have a certain idea about how the words can play out in that particular tune and it helps. The music is also an added advantage at times because it helps you get a clearer picture of the kind of lyrics the director would be expecting from you,” he explains.
Vinayak has two more projects — Vishak Vivek Vinod’s Malgudi Days and Khai Mill’s Akashavani — in the pipeline now. “I have penned only one song for Akashavani and it is a sad, serious song, but my Malgudi Days song is for kids and it’s similar to Kanninullil kanmani... in Trivandrum Lodge,” he adds.
