25 years in the making

A play that was in the director’s mind for over two decades was finally staged this Friday

Tumhara Vincent, a play on the life and death of Vincent Van Gogh, was staged at the Gurbaksh Singh Hall in the University of Hyderabad campus on Friday night, bringing to life a two-decade-long idea that director Satyabrata Rout had conceived in the early ‘90s.

Told through the account of letters exchanged between Vincent and his brother Theo, the play saw excellent performances from all the actors who took part, particularly Shahid Ur Rehman who played the titular role. And the director, known for his set designs, ensured that this play was no different.

“It was a tough time for me in the ‘90s, when I was freelancing in Delhi, having just graduated from the National School of Drama,” Satyabrata explains, “It was then that I came across the story of Vincent and found myself relating to the character.”

Satyabrata began working full-time on the script earlier this year, taking three months of his time. “This is a turning point for my 35-year long career,” Satyabrata says, “I think I have achieved something great.”
