LDF’s new Mayor candidates
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The LDF, which fell short of a majority by six seats, has landed in a dilemma over the new mayoral candidate in the hung corporation council as their original choice C. Jayan Babu lost to BJP in Pangode.
BJP has won 34 out of 100 seats pushing UDF to a third with just 21 seats.
Sources say the party is seriously considering former health standing committee chairperson S. Pushpalatha (Nedungad), P. Babu (Vanchiyoor) and Sreekumar (Chackai) for the challenging job.
CPM district secretary Kadakampally Surendran said the party was yet to take a decision.
“At the moment, we are not considering any names and a decision would be made after holding discussions,” he said.
However, rumours are rife that Mr Sreekumar, a full-time party worker after he retired from the KSEB, would be its nominee.
“I won with a whopping majority of 1,100 votes, and my priority would be to address recurring flooding at Chackai,” he said.
“If I'm the mayor, waste management would be given top priority. Parking too is a serious problem to be addressed immediately.”
Mr Babu, a first-time corporator, was active in the party for over 40 years. But he says he’s not in the race.
Ms Pushpalatha, winning for the fourth time, said the party would take a decision.
