Parliament Winter Session to be stormier

BJP may have to face an invigorated Congress-led Opposition

New Delhi: Already handicapped by lack of strength in the Rajya Sabha, something which has repeatedly proven to be an impediment for the NDA Government in getting some key Bills passed in Parliament, despite having an absolute majority in the Lok Sabha, the forthcoming Winter Session of Parliament is likely to be a stormy one as a demoralised BJP may have to face an invigorated Congress-led Opposition.

Enthused with its improved show in Bihar Assembly polls, where the Congress won 27 out of the total 41 seats it had contested, the grand old party along with allies like Samajwadi Party, RJD, JD(U) and Trinamul, could make things difficult for the BJP-led NDA, especially in the Upper House.

With the all important Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill pending in Parliament and the Congress vehemently opposed to some of the aspects of the Constitution Amendment Bill, which have been introduced by the NDA, the Opposition could again stall its passage, political observers pointed out.

Moreover, it would also be interesting to see whether a chastened Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaches out to the Opposition and adopts a consensual approach to ensure that the Parliament functions smoothly and the key bills are passed.

The Opposition has often blamed Mr Modi of being aloof and absent from the Lok Sabha and also of not indulging in deliberations with them on various aspects related to the proceedings of Parliament.

While the Congress-led Opposition managed to stall the proceedings in both Houses during the Monsoon Session, Bihar elections results may re-energise it.
