‘Niravu’ ready with a lakh grow bags for city dwellers

Collective formed by 101 households
Kozhikode: ‘Niravu’, a collective formed by 101 households in Vengeri near here, is ready with one lakh grow bags filled with bio-fertilizer rich soil. Each grow bag is filled with a mixture of 10 types of organic components including soil, cow manure, goat manure, coconut husk etc.
“Unlike other grow bags, this could be used for growing vegetables three times. City dwellers, who have lack of space can make use of the grow bags,” Project coordinator of Niravu, Babu Parambath told DC. Already 2,000 grow bags have been sold out. Niravu has been getting bulk orders from colleges, other institutions and working professionals who are wary of pesticide-containing vegetables.
“Unlike in the past, a large number of people evince keen interest in organic farming nowadays. The change is visible especially in city areas. People are willing to put in extra work for cultivation to have an organic meal. We are tapping on this aspect,” Mr Babu explained.
The cost of a bag is Rs 100. Niravu will reach the grow bag anywhere provided the customer bears the travelling cost.
