Madras High Court seeks lawyers’ suggestions to fine-tune CISF cover

For the time being, advocates can enter court halls using the identity cards given to them

Chennai: The Madras high court has sought suggestion from advocates for the improvement of Central Industrial Security Force security for the court. The First bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana before which the suo motu proceedings came up for hearing, said the system which was in a nascent stage needed to be fine-tuned. In an effort to simplify the entry process, the high court would distribute swipe cards to advocates and others concerned. It may take some time. For the time being, advocates can enter court halls using the identity cards given to them.
When the Bench took up the matter, a group of advocates complained about the functioning of CISF and area allocated for them. The president of Madras high court advocates’ association, R.C. Paul Kanagaraj, said, “Frisking by CISF by touching the body of advocates should be stopped. Kasi Ramalingam submitted that advocates were facing several problems.
Elephant G. Rajendran sought CISF cover for the entire campus. Agreeing with advocates over issues faced by them and other litigants under the new system, the Chief Justice said “Yes, there are some teething problems and we have to sort out these issues”.
He recalled that when a new security arrangement was introduced in Supreme Court, people faced problems and many opposed it. Gradually, this was accepted by all.
He said a review of CISF security would be done in two months. He said representatives of Bar associations or members of the Bar who have any suggestion may make appropriate representation to the court’s security committee. The committee may submit a working report three days prior to the next date of hearing.” Later, the bench posted the matter for January 5. Meanwhile, a group of advocates staged a demonstration opposing CISF cover.
