Velachery areas resemble sewer as water recedes

Power blackout continued for the third day in the locality leading to drinking water shortage
Chennai: Rains have abated for the last 24 hours but residents of Velachery and adjoining areas continue to live a nightmare of sorts as vast sections of the area has turned into a sewer due to floods.
Dozens of families have vacated places such as Ram Nagar, Srinivasa Nagar, Padmavathy Nagar, Muruga Nagar and several other water logged areas. “The situation is terrible. It is not just water creeping into homes. Sludge has entered many houses on the ground floors of building and also into the sumps,” said Gayatri V, a resident of AGS colony.
In most places, stagnant water continues to block access and movement of people and goods. Water is logged till knee levels in most of the streets. “In many streets, water level has started to come down but sewage water, human waste and debris are spread everywhere. The stink is unbearable. Also, there is a worry of outbreak of epidemic,” said Dhanya V.K., who resides at Ram Nagar.
Power blackout continued for the third day in the locality leading to drinking water shortage. “Power in our area went on Sunday morning and has not restored yet. We are running out of water and it is very difficult to manage with kids,” said Mitty Thomas, a home-maker. Some buildings in the area in which construction works are ongoing has partially collapsed due to heavy rain and water stagnation.
