Kozhikode: The SFI activists of prominent colleges here organized a ‘Street lecture session’ near Mananchira on Wednesday in protest against the statement of Education Minister Abdu Rabb that he was against girls and boys sitting next to each other and that if needed they could sit so using chairs. Rebuffing the minister’s stand, the girls and boys sat together and listened to the lecture by P.J. Vincent, noted writer and faculty member of Meenchanda Government Arts College.
He said that the minister should not have made such an outrageous comment to promote sex segregation in educational institutions. When sex education was needed among students, the authorities were trying to discourage it. “Students unions like SFI should raise their voice against such practices which are seen only in self- financing colleges,” he said.
Over 100 students gathered at the spot. The Minister had said that students could sit next to each other on the same bench only if the institutions and students do not have any complaints. He also said that there was no gender discrimination at Farook college and stood by the stand of the college management.
