Andhra Pradesh: Mayors want gunman for security purpose
Rajahmundry: In the aftermath of brutal murder of woman mayor Katari Anuradha and her husband at her official chamber at Chittoor in the broad day light by the hired killers, mayors especially woman mayors appeal to the state government to provide a gun man and enhance security cover to ensure safety to them and also help them discharge their duty without fear.
Following the murder of the Chittoor mayor, the women mayors were shaken both emotionally and physically. They say that while discharging their duty in the civic administration they may have to take harsh decisions on some issues inviting the wrath of a section of the people.
For instance, in the event of demolition of encroachments in municipal areas, the public representatives like mayor, local MLA, MLC and others face a lot of resistance from the aff-ected people.
In case of a woman mayor, she may not even be in position to protect herself, when a large group of people arrive at her raising slogans and demanding to red-ress their grievances and involving in heated arguments on the issue.
The woman mayor will be having a camp clerk and a Dafedar to come to her rescue in such cases. They want a gunman to be appointed all the time whenever they go to field inspection and also attend to duty and travel by a car to visit the places besides enha-nced security cover at their official chambers.
They want the visitors to be frisked thoroughly before allowing them into her chamber to meet and a metal detector should be placed in front of the entrance of her chamber to check whether anyone is carrying weapons.
The mayors are also demanding for installation of CCTV cameras at their offices as such facility helps keep tab on identity of visitors.
Rajahmundry Mayor P. Rajani Sesha Sai said, “It is good to have a gun man to provide security especially when I go for outdoor inspection in the city. A large number of people rush towards me expressing their problems at times ire and it makes me sometimes nervous. Though we have CCTV cameras installed at my office, they are not in working condition at present.”
Eluru Mayor Sheik Nurjahan echoed the same view on providing security and said, “When we take some harsh decisions as part of civic administration, some people turn against us and may take revenge by harming us. So it is better to have a gun man and enhanced security cover at my office.”
