‘Overspeeding’ kills 3 in Telangana; Tourism chief’s grandson among dead
Hyderabad: Three people, including the grandson of Telangana State Tourism Development Corporation chairman Pervaram Ramulu, former DGP of undivided AP, were killed in a road mishap on Outer Ring Road on Wednesday morning at Narsingi.
The Skoda Superb car that the victims were traveling in rammed into a tanker truck from behind after the driver lost control. The tanker was carrying milk for a Reliance storage unit in the city outskirts.
Mr Ramulu’s grandson Varun Pawar, 21, his cousin Amit Pawar, 20, and E. Gyan Dev, 21 died on the spot, while Rahul Pawar, 22, who was injured, was rushed to hospital by the police. The victims were returning home to Barkatpura from Patancheru. The accident occurred at around 6.30 am at Kokapet. “The speeding car rammed into the comparatively slow moving truck from the rear. The front portion of the car was heavily damaged, trapping the victims inside,” said Shamshabad zonal DCP A.R. Srinivas.
The two persons who were sitting in front died instantly of serious head injuries, before the police arrived. Though the driver was wearing a seat belt, it was of no help as the entire front side of the car was crushed under the truck.
The truck was travelling on the third lane of the ORR, where the speed limit is 80 kmph and minimum speed limit is 40 kmph. “The truck was moving at more than 50 kmph when the accident took place,” an official from Narsingi police station said.
Police said the car was travelling much faster than the truck. “It could be more than 100 kmph, however, we are not sure. The survivor is in a critical condition and cannot talk now,” an investigating official said.
“It could be due to overspeeding. But we are not sure how fast the car was going and how slow the truck was since there were no eyewitnesses. Only the injured victim can give the details,” said an official.
The youngest victim, Amit, was driving the car. Investigating officials are checking whether he or anyone else was drunk. “We have not got liquor bottles from the vehicle. But we are also not sure if they had drinks before getting into the car,” an official said.
The car (AP09 CQ 5553), is registered in the name of Mr Ramulu’s wife, P. Indira. The driver of the truck has been taken into custody and a case has been registered under IPC Section 304 A.
Party for job ends in tragedy
Varun Pawar, the grandson of TSTDC chairman Peravaram Ramulu, his cousins and their friend, had gone to a farmhouse in Patancheru to celebrate a special occasion: Varun, who is pursuing his Bachelor’s in architecture, had just got his first job. The three who died in the accident were students and in their early 20s. Their family members were in shock as they accepted the bodies at the Osmania Hospital mortuary.
“He had informed his parents and left home with his cousins Amit and Rahul and his friend for the farmhouse in Patancheru. They were returning after the celebrations,” said a relative of the victims.
Varun, son of Mr Subhash Pawar who is the son-in-law ex DGP Ramulu, was a final year student of Vaishnavi School of Architecture and Planning in the city. The other victim, Amit Pawar, son of Mr Digambar Rao Pawar who is brother of Subhash Pawar, was a B.Tech second year student in CMR Engineering.
