Activists take ‘climate march’ to Athirappally

Demand for conservation of tropical forests, global warning stressed

THRISSUR: Hundreds of environmental activists and others took part in the Global People’s Climate March held from Vazhachal to Athirappally Waterfalls on Sunday to ahead of the global climate summit taking place in Paris on Monday.

The march demanded effective steps for the conservation of tropical forests and measures to check the process of global warming during the summit in Paris.

A document brought out by the organisers in connection with the march called for the government to take effective steps for generating renewable and non-polluting sources of energy.

The climate march is part of similar marches held in other parts of the world. In 2014, seven lakh people have participated in such marches across the world and the main march held in London, organisers said.

The organisers of the march said that 2015 had marked the highest temperature in the history despite several countries taking measures to minimise the adverse impact of climate changes. The rising temperature is an indication that it would take several years to show any tangible results, they pointed out.

The march warned about the large scale destruction of the tropical forests, the most powerful agents for carbon sequestration, in the name of development will have serious consequences for the society. Around 2,000 persons including students from schools, colleges, Kerala Agricultural University and tourists took part in the march. The march began at 11.30 am from Vazhachal and ended in the afternoon at Athirappally.

Former State Bio-diversity Board Chairman and Prof. V. S. Vijayan, environmentalist C. R. Neelakandan and A. Latha of the River Research Centre were amongst the prominent people who have attended the march.
