Chamundi’s date with Nandi Mahabhisheka
Mysuru: More than 5,000 devotees thronged Chamundi hills, on the occasion of Maha Abhisheka to the 350-year-old, 17 feet high monolithic Nandi statue atop Chamundi hills here on Sunday.
The Abhisheka was organised by ‘Bettada Balaga,’ a group of morning walkers and Nandi Pooja Mahotsava Committee of Sri Chamundi hills. It is being held on the day before the third Monday of Kaarthika Maasa of the Hindu calendar since 2006. More than 30 auspicious items including milk, curd, honey, sugar, turmeric, kumkum, sandalwood paste, dry fruits, tender coconut and others were offered to Nandi.
The ceremony began with JSS Math seer Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Swamiji starting the Abhishekas. He was joined by new scion of the royal family of Mysuru, Sri Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar and Maharani Ms Pramoda Devi Wadiyar. More than 12 priests performed the rituals for over one and a half hours.
Such Abhisheka is said to enhance the life of the stone statue, sources said.
