Four washed away in Chittoor

Many parts of Chittoor district remained under a sheet of water due to the heavy rains
Tirupati /Nellore/ Ongole: The incessant rains of the past 20 days have created havoc in Nellore and Chittoor districts and also in Prakasam district to a certain extent.
On Wednesday, four unidentified persons were washed away while crossing a rivulet near Vengalraju Kandriga in Satya-vedu mandal of Chittoor district. RDO V. Veerabramham, referring to an eyewitness account, said the victims yelled for help but there was hardly anything the locals could do to save them. The locals, along with expert swimmers, launched a search at the instance of the RDO, but there was no trace of them till the evening.
At Govindavaram in Yerpedu mandal, two persons were rescued from the Swarnamukhi river by NDRF personnel. District collector Siddharth Jain directed police and NDRF personnel, including revenue officials to guard all vulnerable roads and alert people, especially those living near rivers or water tanks, not to venture too close to the water bodies.

Rivers in the district including Gargeya, Swarnamukhi and Bahuda, are in spate as the dams upstream were opened in view of heavy inflows.
Roads were washed away at many places due to heavy flow of the water bringing traffic movement to a grinding halt. Worst hit are residents of Sathyavedu, Srikalahasti, Nag-ari and Chandragiri constituencies. Many villages are marooned in these places and people are suffering due shortage of food and drinking water.
Sathyavedu constituency reco-rded the highest rainfall of 18 cm on Tuesday, followed by 16 cm in Varadayapalem. A village tank in Varadayapalem and some tanks in Pedda Thippa Samudram mandal breached.
With Kalangi and Swarnam-ukhi rivers in spate apart from Pamulakaluva, the situation is alarming in Sullurpeta in Nellore district.
In Prakasam district, all streams are in spate. Upputeruvagu is in spate and inflows are increasing into the Rallapadu irrigation project in Lingasamudram mandal.
The water level touched 19- feet mark.
Met officials warn of heavy rains in AP
Heavy rains would continue to pound south coastal AP and Rayalaseema in the next two to three days, warned Met officials. “Under the influence of a trough of low pressure over south-east Bay of Bengal and adjoining South Andaman Sea an upper air cyclonic circulation and low pressure would brew in the next 24 hours. Rather heavy to heavy rainfall is expected in south coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema in the next two days. North-coastal AP may receive moderate rainfall,” said a Met official at the Cyclone Warning Centre, Visakhapatnam. On Tuesday, parts of Chittoor, Nellore, Kurnool, Kadapa, Anantapur, Prakasam, Krishna and West Godavari districts witnessed heavy downpour.
