BRS, LRS a mistake that can’t be erased, says KT Rama Rao

Over 2,700 illegal structures are built on drains.

Hyderabad: IT and panchayat raj minister K.T. Rama Rao on Friday said that regularisation of illegal structures and structural deviation was a “mistake” and the BRS and LRS schemes had been announced so that no unauthorised constructions came up in future.

Speaking to DC, the minister said, “Regularisation of illegal structures was a mistake, both on the part of the government and the citizens (for constructing structures on government lands and deviating from the original building approvals). However, it can’t be erased now. So, we came out with the regularisation schemes (BRS, LRS) with a deadline (October 28) in order to avoid future unauthorised constructions.”

Illegal structures in the city have gained prominence as over 2,700 illegal structures are built on drains; a little continuous rainfall could cause Chennai-type floods in the city.

The Kirloskar Committee, appointed by the government, had also cited construction of housing colonies on the foreshores of tanks as one of the reasons that could lead to inundation in several parts of the city.

The minister, who was speaking at a CCI event in the city on accelerating infrastructure growth in Telangana state, said “Public-private partnership is imperative for infrastructure development as the government alone cannot take up capital intensive projects and need India Inc.'s support. The business community is also backing the PPP mode as they feel new governments, both in the state and the Centre, would accelerate growth.”

The CII Telangana chairperson said, “We have pinned our hopes on the new governments and would request them to identify growth accelerators and also appoint a joint task force with members from the industry and government to boost infrastructure and address policy-related issues.”
