A candid conversation with this city-based author whose latest book was just released

When city-based author, Preeti Shenoy writes a book titled Why We Love the Way We Do, it’s time to get to some straight talk with the ‘relationship expert’ herself. Does the Bengaluru girl who tweaks situations from real lives, believe that we are all slaves of our heart — she answers this and other interesting questions about how most people stray and are genetically programmed to do so.
“This book is a collection of pieces adapted from my popular column on relationships, sex, communication between men and women and finding the perfect partner. The inspiration comes from real life stories that people have shared with me over the years.
I get mails from strangers who share their most intimate details and ask for my advice. When I’m not directly involved in something, my perspective is so different from the one someone badly entangled in the situation has, and is always graciously received. We are all slaves of our heart, no matter how old or young we are, when we start a new relationship, we all have the same anxieties, excitement and happiness that we had when we first fell in love, probably as teenagers. Most people are okay when I ask them if I can write about what they have told me,” reveals Preeti.
Confessing to how her research on relationships also helped her gain an insight, she states, “I found out interesting things — whether there is a pattern, whether we can control things like choosing whom we can fall in love with, what can we do to make the relationship last, how we can tell if it is love or lust and so on. The book is divided into seven sections. Finding the One is largely about finding love and deals with the dating stage; getting hitched is about marriage; When Things Go Wrong deals with break-ups and all things associated; On Men and Women focuses on gender differences; Let’s Talk deals with how differently men and women communicate; Three to Tango is about infidelity; and Between the Sheets is about sex.”
Another interesting subject that the petite Preeti has penned in her book is how Tinder has changed Valentine. “With Valentine’s Day preparations gathering momentum, there was no respite from the tacky hearts, splashes of red and declarations of undying love through every medium possible. I distinctly remember at college when 14 girls in my class were all delighted at having received a dozen red roses. I guess that one guy was hedging his bets, hoping that out of the 14 chosen ones, even if one said yes, he would be content. Today, I see my timeline on social media pages flooded with various days prefixed with names of various things cute and tons of pictures of satisfied 20-somethings and teeny boppers posing with their cherished treasures of roses, declaring happiness to be loved so much.”
Having just got back from a holiday in Maldives and now in between attending the Litfests in Delhi and Bengaluru, she gets candid on her other hobbies, that include, “Ashtanga yoga, organic terrace gardening, art, photography, reading and spending time with my family and my dog!”
