Check contractors’ past works: George
The BBMP would verify the quality of works carried out by road contractors.
Bengaluru: The BBMP would verify the quality of works carried out by road contractors in the past before awarding them tenders, in order to improve the quality of city roads. During his second inspection on Tuesday, Bengaluru Development Minister K.J. George instructed BBMP Commissioner G. Kumar Naik to conduct a background check of contractors’ works before any new project is handed over to them.
Upset with the lackadaisical attitude of the BBMP engineers, he demanded a full report on the road infrastructure works carried out in the city. He told the engineers present, “How did you let the poor quality works pass under your nose? What were you doing all these years?” When Major Roads department engineer Ramesh tried out wriggle out by saying he was new to the department, Mr George chided, “Don’t give me reasons for not carrying out your responsibilities.”
Later addressing the media, he said, “It is evident that sub-standard works are the reason for poor quality roads. Henceforth, it’s the responsibility of the commissioner to ensure that erring contractors are not awarded works.” Allalasandra flyover: Following reports that even before the Allalasandra flyover was officially inaugurated it was damaged, Mr George inspected the flyover. On noticing its conditions, he instructed the BBMP officials to asphalt the flyover.
