Baby born from world’s oldest sperm; breaks Guinness World Record
In what can be termed as an astonishing breakthrough in IVF technology, a baby boy has been born from the world’s oldest sperm. His father had frozen it 23 years ago after he was diagnosed with cancer.
Alex Powell, from Australia, was just 15 years old when he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. After he was advised to undergo chemotherapy immediately, he decided to freeze his sperm as the treatment could leave him infertile. Later on, both he and his wife, Vi, decided to have a baby and began IVF treatment in the year 2013.
After just a year of IVF, the couple were blessed with a baby boy, Xavier, on June 17, 2015. This has also gained them an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records as the previous record for being conceived using frozen sperm was 21 years. Although there is no technical limit on how long a sperm can be stored, it is usually just under ten years, according to the Unilad.
