Reliving their lives OnScreen
Vinil Vasu’s second film narrates the life of engineering students and has real-life engineers playing the lead roles.
When you hear the name A for Apple, B for B.Tech, you realize immediately that it’s going to be a campus movie. But director Vinil Vasu is sure that it’ll be like no other.
A for Apple, B for B Tech will follow eight characters, five guys and three girls through nine years. The movie which has 8 debutants in its lead is all set to start shooting in Adi Shankara Institute of Engineering, Kalady in January.
According to Vinil Vasu, the movie deals with contemporary issues that revolve around engineering colleges and the lives of the engineers even after they graduate. It’ll capture the transitions each character goes through in the course of nine years.
For eight months he’s been in and out of universities gathering information about engineering students in Kerala. “Eight lakh of these students in Kerala have backlogs” says Vinil. It is this story of the engineering fraternity that he intends to bring onscreen.
The one thing that connects all the debutants except for one of them, Pranav, is that they are all from the engineering background. Vinil says that he wanted engineers to act in the movie as they would be living their own lives in the movie.
Setting aside rumours that he put up a Facebook post inviting engineers to act, he says that it was purely coincidental how he found his actors. Abith, Rohith, Adam, Dhruv, Pranav and Anagha are the youngsters who’ve been cast so far. Abith Naser, who plays one of the main leads, was spotted in Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium in Kaloor, while Rohith, who plays the other main character, was cast from a gym in Edapally. D4Dance fame Pranav Shashidharan is the only one who doesn’t share an Engineering background among the debutants. He will be playing the character, Aby. After years of searching, Vinil is more than satisfied with actors he’s found. However he is still on the look-out for two more female leads.
After completing eight workshops, Rohith who plays Arun Chandra, says he feels as if he’s back in hostel. “We have an apartment to ourselves, and it’s just like our college days.” The camaraderie
between them will show onscreen, he says.
Already attracting attention, the young debutants are in talks to sign new movies. A for Apple, B for B.Tech will be Vinil Vasu’s second movie after debuting with Last Supper which starred Unni Mukundan in the lead. With the movie set to release next year by July, Vinil promises that it’ll act as a change in the Malayalam cinema world.
