ICF racing against time
ICF currently has 11,699 employees .
Chennai: The Integral Coach Factory (ICF) here, which suffered a partial shutdown for a week due to the recent heavy downpour and floods, is to work extra days to meet the target of coach manufacture.
The current working year that started on April 1 will prove to be a litmus test for ICF which is working in full force to meet the internally set target of 2,020 coaches by March 2016.
To meet this mark, factory employees of the shell and furnishing units have decided to sacrifice their X-mas — New year holidays from December 26 and 31 and work extra time. The primary reason for extra load of work is to compensate the loss incurred due to the partial shutdown of the factory from December 1 to December 8.
K.N.Babu, secretary to ICF GM, speaking to DC, said heavy rain in November and December hampered regular production work as many parts of the factory went under water.
“We had to declare leave on 3rd, 4th and 5th of this month as leave owing to intensity of water logging. During November when we had a similar situation after Diwali, we could recover in two days, but this time it was not the case,” he said.
“When the water level raised three feet above the ground floor of our shell and furnishing factories, we had to shutdown power to the entire factory to prevent electrocution,” he said. In the month of November, ICF fell short of a target of 175 coaches by 40 coaches.
However, the cumulative output of ICF in 2015-16 is higher than in 2014-15 by 78 coaches. “In November 2014, while the factory manufactured 1,110 coaches, by November 30, 2015 it has gone up to 1,118,” Babu added. ICF currently has 11,699 employees .
