Chennai: Stop protest or we’ll give TC, Sairam Engineering College tells students

Student took protest against the reinstatement of the campus director who allegedly tormented students.

Chennai: The tiff between Sairam Engineering College authorities and students took an ugly turn when college authorities allegedly threatened three students with issuing transfer certificates (TC) as they conducted a protest against the reinstatement of the campus director who allegedly tormented students.

An alumni of the institution requesting anonymity said the superintendent and campus in charge P. Balu was brought back to the campus in the same position. Registrar of Anna University S. Ganesan said the institution is not allowed to issue transfer certificates without the university permission. “I will enquire into the matter. No one from the institution consulted us. They have to give valid reasons against the students before issuing transfer certificates.”

One of the three students who was threatened said, “CEO Sai Prakash Leo Muthu called us and our parents and said he will kill us. Then, he said that after writing the examination we would be given TC. I am sure after this they will issue a TC.”

He also added that the other two students who will be issued TC were called to the trustees office and they were forced to write that they would seek TC after the examination. “The management asked my father to write a letter that I will be given TC. My father didn’t write the letter. But the other two students did. One of them wants to leave the college,” he said.

Further, his father said, “We are not changing the college. We have not yet filed a complaint against the management but we will talk to the Vice-Chancellor of Anna University.” The institution principal was not available for comment.

Earlier Balu, the campus director, had earned the wrath of students by allegedly imposing ban on mobile phones, implementing a dress code and levying exorbitant fines from them unnecessarily.
