How Amitabh Bachchan humbled Bejoy

Filmmakers gushing about Big B’s craft in front of the camera is nothing new.
Filmmakers gushing about Amitabh Bachchan’s craft in front of the camera is nothing new. Adding to the long list of Big B’s admirers is director Bejoy Nambiar who had a chance to work with him in Wazir who says that Bachchan’s experience added to the film in many ways.
He shares an anecdote: “There is a shot in the film where Mr Bachchan, who is on a wheelchair, enters a room and Neil Nitin Mukesh is behind him. Mr Bachchan had to turn and look at Neil. The shot turned out beautifully because exactly half of his shadow fell on Neil, covering him. It created a certain impact in that scene. I went and congratulated my cameraman and was very proud of that shot. Then the next day on set Mr Bachchan asked me if I liked how he cast exactly half his shadow on Neil. Turns out it was Mr Bachchan’s idea. Only someone with so much experience can pull off something like that. And here we were so proud of our work! The man has a certain aura that humbles you.” Bejoy reveals that he was initially skeptical about using VFX to portray Big B as a man on a wheelchair, but he came around. “I’m all for real, I wasn’t sure if using VFX was a good idea but I have a good cameraman who assured me that it won’t look fake at all.” He adds that he met several ATS officers to get the details right, as the film deals with the subject of terrorism. “I did thorough research on the subject. I met many ATS officers but of course they couldn’t reveal too much information, as it’s a matter of national security. They were still very cooperative. They were keen that they be represented in the correct light, because in the past there has been an inaccurate depiction in cinema.”
