PMK leaders face no threat: DGP

Chennai: Stating that there was no threat perception to PMK leaders, Dr S. Ramadoss and his son Dr Anbumani Ramadoss, the DGP on Tuesday prayed to the Madras high court to vacate its interim order which directed the state government to provide round-the-clock, armed police protection for them from November 5.
T.P. Sundaramoorthy, inspector general (administration), stated this in his counter-affidavit filed on behalf of the DGP through special government pleader I.S. Inbadurai to the petition filed by PMK president G.K. Mani, seeking police protection to the two leaders.
A division bench, comprising justices N. Paul Vasanthakumar and R. Mahadevan posted to November 21 further hearing of the case.
During the course of hearing, Inbadurai submitted that as a matter of policy, security was provided to those occupying constitutional or other state-related offices as any attack or harm done to such person may be perceived as an attack on the state, weakening the faith in the powers of the state; those who face threat from anti-national, unconstitutional or subversive forces like insurgents, extremists, terrorists and fundamentalists whose objective was to over-awe the state; and temporary protection was sometimes given to a person who faces an imminent threat as revealed by specific intelligence inputs. Neither Ramadoss nor Anbumani Ramadoss fall in any of these three categories, he added.
In his counter, Sundaramoorthy submitted that reports received from various agencies disclosed that Ramadoss and Anbumani Ramadoss did not face any threats from any quarter. It was not correct to state that the decision taken by the security review committee was under the influence of the chief minister.
The decision was taken after the careful review of the reports received from various police units, including Intelligence Bureau and, hence, the petition may be dismissed, he added.
