Chennai: A policeman’s secret plan of marrying two women within a gap of 24 hours was stopped by the police on Thursday when he was preparing for the second marriage at a hall in Kanchipuram.

Karthikeyan, 25, a resident of Nanaganallur, attached to the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, Chennai, landed himself in a soup, attempting to do so. “He was getting ready to marry the girl his parents had chosen, after having a registered  marriage with his girl friend of six years on Wednesday in Chennai when we caught him,” Sivakanchi police said.

Philomina, 24, a call centre employee whom he married on Wednesday at Royapuram register office, reached the marriage hall with the police.  Karthikeyan was to marry a woman from Tiruvannamalai on Thursday and the reception was held at the same hall on Wednesday evening.

When questioned Karthikeyan told the police that he had married Philomina, a resident of St Thomas Mount, on Wednesday. When they came to know about this, the bride’s family called off the marriage and lodged a complaint with the police.

The police took Karthikeyan to the police station for further questioning. By the evening the bride’s family agreed for a settlement of expense and withdrew the complaint. “Philomina too had asked the police to help her to live with her husband.

She never asked for any kind of legal action. We have not arrested him but there will be a departmental action against him,” a senior police officer said.
