Panels to check diversion of food grains from the PDS

Food dept to form vigilance committees to check food diversion to the open market.

Raichur: Food and civil supplies minister Dinesh Gundurao said on Friday that his department will constitute vigilance committees at the grassroot level to check diversion of food grains to the open market from the public distribution system. (PDS).  
 
Speaking to media persons here, he termed the menace of  bogus ration cards and diversion of food grains to the open market as his biggest challenges.  “This problem has existed for decades.  Due to this, the department has decided to constitute vigilance committees to keep a check on such malpractices”, he explained. 
 
There are over 96 lakh below poverty line (BPL) and Anthodaya card holders in the state. An additional 30 lakh applications have been submitted online for new cards. Once the  issuance of new cards is completed, Anna Bhagya beneficiaries will constitute 80 percent of the population, he said.
