Chennai: Six people died and six others were badly injured as the compound wall of an under construction building of a private company, collapsed in Ponneri, Tiruvallur district, Saturday night.
The dead were mainly migrant labourers from North India who were part of the construction crew of the microtech company located in Chinna Puliyur , Gummidipoondi taluk, the police said.
The labourers who were living in huts close to the compound wall were buried under the debris when it collapsed at around10 pm.
“Six of them died on the spot and the six injured were rushed to the Ponneri Government Hospital, and are in serious condition,” said Tiruvallur district collector K. Veera Raghava Rao, adding that rescue operations were in full swing and ambulances had been mobilized from adjacent areas to ferry the injured.
Ruling out that the wall could have collapsed in rain, the district collector said the district had received only 1 cm of rain on Saturday. The collector announced that an inquiry would be conducted into the incident.
