Chennai: People living in the residential areas of Ennore Thermal Power Station (ETPS) have had to bear the stench of accumulated garbage for the last 10 days as the corporation’s conservancy workers say they have not received any official communication from the ETPS administration regarding cleaning the premises nor have conservancy charges been paid to the civic body.
“It has been more than 10 days since the conservancy staff entered our camps and now the garbage bins are overflowing,” said K. Venkattaiah, Ennore CITU secretary. “More than 600 families reside in three camps here. It would become a worst-case scenario if the waste continues to pile up and choke the place,” he added.
A field-level official at Ennore said the city corporation had not received any official request from the ETPS administration and the staff could not enter the area without their request. “It is like trespassing if our staff enter premises which do not belong to us without due letter requesting a clean up,” the official said.
“The administration has also not paid any conservancy charges as any private party must pay the corporation to get their area cleaned. Once we get a letter from the administration, our staff will start collecting garbage from the area,” he added.
A senior official at ETPS said that the administration would soon discuss giving a letter, requesting maintenance. “Community bins will be installed at certain places into which residents can place their garbage. If the corporation requires a written consent to collect garbage from the bins, we will cooperate,” the official said.
