Chennai: An 18-month-old boy died after he accidentally slipped into a water sump in his house in Pozhichalur on Sunday.

The victim, identified as Mohanraj, was the only son of Subramani, 30, a construction worker, and Mahalakshmi, residing at Vinayaga nagar, in Pozhichallur, the police said.

On Sunday afternoon, the couple was washing clothes behind their house and the boy was playing next to them when he had accidentally fell into the three feet sump in their house, police investigations into the incident revealed.

However, the couple was unaware of this for hours as the husband had left home late noon and the mother was in the kitchen; both of them assuming that the child was with the other person.

The incident came to light after Subramani, who came home around 6 pm, enquired about the baby, much to the shock of his wife. The alarmed couple searched frantically for their child in the neighbourhood before finding the baby floating in the sump around 7.30 pm.

They immediately rushed the boy to a local hospital where he was declared dead. The Sankar nagar police, who arrived at the spot, secured the child’s body and sent it to the Chromepet government hospital for post-mortem.
