Chennai: The city police have set up a combined control room by bringing in officials from the Chennai corporation and electricity board at its new headquarters to handle monsoon issues.
“The idea is to give relief to people who are affected by rain floods as early as possible. After a zone-level meeting with the corporation officials and city police officials, it was decided to set up a combined control room at old commissioner’s office in Egmore,” a senior police officer informed.
The city police had already identified low-laying areas in the city besides readying possible shelters for the affected people. On Sunday, we received calls from people in Egmore, Nungambakkam and Vadapalani, said the officer.
People are used to calling the police when there is a crisis. So, we decided to have a combined control room so that it was easy to execute the solutions, he said.
“Mainly, people call for flooding and sewage leaks on the road. We coordinate the work with the civic body. Others call for mainly electricity-related issues, like overhead cable snap or electricity leak in stagnant water,” the officer said. The public can call 23452325, 28555069, 28552090 for any kind of assistance for problems related to rains.
