Chennai: The Madras HC has directed an IAS aspirant and a male IPS officer to appear before the court on November 22 in connection with a petition filed by the woman who alleged that the officer had betrayed her after promising to marry her.
Justice N. Kirubakaran directed R.V. Varun Kumar, IPS, and G. Priyadharshini to appear before him in his chamber on November 22 at 4.30 pm and posted to November 22 further hearing of the petition filed by Priyadharshini, which sought to direct the state government to take disciplinary action against the officer and consequently suspend him till the disposal of the criminal case registered against him on her complaint.
Petitioner's counsel T.P. Senthil Kumar submitted that Priyadharshini and Varun Kumar, IPS, became friends at the Ganesh IAS Academy in Chennai in 2007. Subsequently, they fell in love while studying at a coaching institute for civil service preparation and he promised to marry her. On his compulsion, she did not write the civil service examination. However, after he completed his main examination, he started demanding dowry and avoiding her. Hence, she lodged a complaint with the police and he obtained anticipatory bail.
Moreover, Varun was, from the beginning, threatening her, saying that using his influence, he would ruin her and her family members. On August 20, 2013, Varun was posted as an assistant superintendent of police in Thirupathur sub-division, Vellore district. Hence, Priyadharshini filed the present petition, he added.
