Thrissur: Twenty students belonging to ‘Haritha’, the Nature Club of Sree Krishna School, Guruvayur, stopped a banayan tree on the road side from being chopped down, by raising slogans and singing mournful songs here, on Tuesday. They came with placards and raised their voice in protest. They were accompanied by their teachers M.V. Madhu, K.K. Manoj.

M.V. Madhu, one of their teachers says: “Amid widespread cutting of trees, most of them illegally, the Government decision to call a halt to the axing is indeed a welcome step. Systematic destruction of forest resources across the country has posed a serious threat to the environment and the very survival of the people of the country.

Though the Government ban on cutting trees has been in force since 1990, trees are still being cut down with impunity. Most often, development comes at the cost of trees. That is why we got our students to take part in the protest”.

Recently, the Guruvayur Roots Natural Forum saved a banyan tree from being cut down. The PWD decided to cut the tree which stood on the north outer ring road to construct a tunnel for the easy flow of waste water. The local people and environmentalist rose as one and stopped the tree from being cut down.
