Puducherry: Traffic came to a standstill on the arterial Maraimalai Adigal Salai after drivers and conductors of the Government owned Puducherry Road Transport Corporation (PRTC) resorted to a flash strike, demanding action against miscreants who allegedly assaulted the manager of the PRTC today.
Police sources said that Vasudevan, PRTC manager was leaving for his residence at around 1:55 p.m. from the office when a group of miscreants allegedly attacked him and fled the scene. He sustained injuries and was admitted to the Puducherry Government General Hospital.
On learning about the incident, PRTC bus drivers and conductors went on a flash strike and blocked traffic on the Maraimalai Adigal Salai, parking their buses haphazardly in front of the new bus stand. Many buses stopped on the way and passengers were forced to alight.
Police personnel held talks with the agitating crew and asked them to ply the buses and restore traffic. A scuffle ensued between police and the bus crew who refused to yield. Police resorted to a lathi charge and removed the buses parked haphazardly on the road.
P. Lakshmanaswamy, general secretary of the Pondicherry State Government Employees Central Federation, said that bus drivers and conductors in the unions of PRTC would not report to work till police arrested the culprits behind the incident.
