Helen: Heavy loss to fisheries sector
The fisheries sector losses due to the Helen cyclone was assessed at Rs 3.15 crore.
Rajahmundry: The fisheries sector losses due to the Helen cyclone was assessed at Rs 3.15 crore in East Godavari district.
The preliminary enquiry by fisheries department authorities showed that in total, 182 boats worth Rs 64.80 lakh were lost due to the impact of the cyclone.
In addition to this, 1,090 boats at an estimated cost of Rs 1.09 crore were damaged due to the impact of the cyclone in 13 sea coaat mandals and in the two inland mandals of K. Gangavaram and Kapileswarapuram. Apart from this, fishing nets numbering 1,625 worth Rs 1.41 crore were lost.
In total, 2,879 fisherfolk were affected in the form of loss of livelihood or property loss due to the impact of the cyclone in all these 15 mandals.
A fisherman of Uppada in the district, Kare Jagannadham, 40, died at Kanuru near Machilpatnam in Krishna district two days ago in an accident that occurred due to cyclone. A metal pole in the area fell on him accidentally when he was trying to tie the boat to it at the coast as he lost his way and landed at Kanuru due to the cyclone and the heavy gale and winds.
According to East Godavari deputy director of fisheries, D. Govindayya, the family of the deceased will be extended Rs 1 lakh insurance amount in addition to Apadbandhu scheme benefits.
As regards the losses, the DD said that teams with stake-holder departments were formed mandal-wise in the district to assess complete losses. The preliminary report was already submitted to the district authorities, the DD said.
