HyderabadA woman approached the L.B. Nagar police on Sunday demanding a share in her husband’s property after he allegedly deserted her, and married another woman just because she gave birth to a baby girl. She staged a protest in front of her in-laws house.

Earlier, a case for dowry harassment and bigamy was registered at the Women’s Police Station. The victim Divya Reddy, 24, the wife of Linga Reddy, 30, a trader, is a resident of NTR Nagar. The couple has a three-year-old daughter Lasya.

Linga Reddy started harassing Divya for giving birth to a girl. “After the child’s birth, he was calm for a while, but soon he started picking up fights with her.”

Linga Reddy sent Divya away and married Anuradha, 21. “When Divya learnt this, she approached the Women’s Police Station and lodged a complaint in March, 2013. Linga Reddy and Anuradha were arrested and remanded.” inspector P. Srinivas Reddy said.

Divya said that at the time of marriage, her family had given Rs 20 lakh and 100 grams gold as dowry. Recently, she came to know that her in-laws were going to sell a multistoried building.

“Divya asked them to give her share in the property as she has to bring up her daughter. Her in-laws did not allow her into the house. She protested in front of their house with the child.

“We intervened and with the help of the police, we sent her into her room.” said Achutya Rao, from the Balala Hakkula Sangham.

Divya also approached the cops with the property issue, who say it is a civil dispute and can do nothing until the court orders.
