Chennai: The Madras high court has directed the Salem Police Commissioner to provide protection till November 28, to the daughter of Dharmapuri DMDK MLA, who apprehended threats from her father since she married her lover against her parents’ wishes.
Justice K.K. Sasidharan gave the interim direction and posted to November 28 further hearing of the petition from B. Pavithra, to enable additional government pleader S. Diwakar to get instructions.
According to Pavithra, she belongs to the Vanniyar community and was doing her first year B.E in a private college.
During her visit to her grandmother's house in Omalur Taluk, she had an affair with a person named Arul, who belonged to the same community and was working in a private company. Pavithra's father, A. Baskar, was opposed to her love affair because of Arul’s poor economic condition.
Her parents started harassing her and began making arrangements for her marriage. Hence, she and Arul eloped and got married on November 20 at a temple as per Hindu rites and ceremonies.
On coming to know about the marriage, Pavithra’s parents, using their political influence, engaged henchmen to separate them. They were thus facing a severe threat from her parents and hiding wherever they could. Friends providing them shelter were also threatened.
