Kochi: The ongoing strike by the nursing students at the Indira Gandhi Cooperative Hospital (IGCH) here has snowballed into a major movement with the city residents taking up the issue.

The various residents associations in the city have joined hands with trade unions and other political organizations to form a “Save IGCH Forum”, which is planning to submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister as well as the Opposition Leader.

“Despite being a cooperative venture, the hospital is governed in such an undemocratic way that the city residents have no role in its administration”, said D. Salim Kumar, Convener of the Forum. The move comes in the wake of allegations that the hospital management is planning to sub-lease the hospital to a private individual, he added.

Demanding that the state government take over the hospital and run it in the public sector, the forum would also hold a mass rally in the hospital on December 3.

The move follows an indefinite strike launched by the 49 nursing students at the hospital from Saturday demanding better infrastructure and faculty resources.
