Man’s bid to get passport using fake papers fails

Praveen Kumar| DC

Bangalore: A man’s attempt to con passport authorities here by furnishing fake certificates of a school in his home town in Nadia, West Bengal, which got destroyed in 2000 floods, came a cropper after the school authorities confirmed they were not genuine.

The Regional Passport Officer has dashed a complaint to the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police-Intelligence to investigate the matter.

Swapan Chandranath had come to Bangalore after the 2000 floods. He had applied for passport at the Regional Passport Office in Koramangala and submitted fake birth and school certificates claiming it has been issued by the Bhabanipura School in Bagula town in Nadia district.

It appears that Chandranath was aware that the school was destroyed in the floods and its records pertaining to the students and other documents got washed away. He thought that if the passport authorities carry out a verification they may not be able to detect the fraud.

But to his bad luck, the school authorities, on being contacted by the passport officer, confirmed that the certificates were fake, said sources in the DCPs office.

The school authorities in their reply have claimed that that a case pertaining to the records, which got washed away in the floods, was registered with the Hanskhali police station in Nadia.

Chandranath had submitted the records of high school, but the school has classes up to fourth standard. The letterhead also differs from the original and the head master’s signature has been forged.

The previous name of the school was Bhabanipur Club Primary School and it was renamed Bhabanipur Primary School in 2008. But in the certificates submitted by Chandranath the letterhead mentions the current name, instead of the earlier one, the sources said.

“We have written to the Passport Office to furnish the address and other details of the said suspect. The case is still in the preliminary stages of investigation. The whereabouts of the suspect is not known. A clear picture about him will be known once the Passport authorities provide the required documents,” the sources added.

Tripura rapists worked as guards

Chennai: In a startling revelation, the Chennai police on Thursday said that two suspects who were part of a gang rape of a 12-year-old girl in Tripura in the first week of November and were arrested here, were working as security guards at an HP office in Taramani after being recruited through the security firm, Group 4.

The two, Suraja Kumar Jamathya, 22, and Hrito Mohan Jamathya, were tracked to Taramani by a CCB police team, based on a request from the Tripura police.

“Escaping from the village in Tripura after committing the crime on November 1, the suspects fled to Delhi and two of them reached Chennai where they were staying with Mangal Dev Varma, who was working with a private security firm.

The two were brought to Chennai by one Karuna Sadan,” the police said.  The police also arrested Mangal Dev Varma and Karuna Sadan for giving shelter to the criminals, knowing very well that the two were wanted in a gang rape.

After reaching Chennai the two joined Group 4 on November 15 and after a training for 10 days, were posted at the HP (software company) office in Taramani.

“Women software professionals were at risk of being violated by the same rapists. It clearly shows that the company which recruited the rapists as security guards had not done any background checks on them before hiring.

We will take strict action against security firms if they employ criminals without doing background verification,” city police commissioner S. George said.
