ChennaiMotorists and commuters who often choke due to traffic snarls on Thiruvottiyur high road from Kasimedu to Ennore can soon hope some respite as a Memorandum of Association (MOA) on parking management and documentation was signed on Friday by the Chennai port and Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC).

Union shipping minister G.K. Vasan who attended the ceremony said that a seven acre land worth Rs 5.8 crore was opened for parking port’s trailer lorries and this move would decongest the congested parts of north Chennai. “The lorries thronging Chennai port would usually be parked along the road sides causing inconvenience and at times even result in fatal accidents and this situation will now change, the minister said. The new facility will also speed up document verifications and reduce the parking time of container and the move would enable direct entry into the port,” he added. Earlier in the day Vasan reviewed traffic congestion on Thiruvottyur high road.

He mentioned that the Chennai-Ennore link road would be opened by January. Vasan said. “By January the road would be opened for use and this could further make transportation easier,” he said. Chennai port chairman Atulya Mishra was present on the occasion.

Several container lorries ply on Ennore high road to Chennai port leading to traffic jam, said Akbar Basha, a resident of Kaladipet, and noted, the move to manage parking by the port trust authorities is the most welcome step.
