New Delhi: E. Sreedharan, popularly known as the 'metro man', was conferred the Lifetime achievement Governance Award 2013 here on Saturday.

Sreedharan, who served as the managing director of the Delhi Metro between 1995 and 2012, was conferred the award for building some of independent India's largest infrastructure projects without time and cost overruns while working for the government.

Organised by governance magazine 'gfiles', these awards were also conferred to seven other serving or retired civil servants for their outstanding contribution.

Bihar Director General of Police Abhayanand, IAS officers J S Deepak and Amarjit Singh were awarded the exceptional contribution award.

Additionally, Ashwani Lohani, Atul Patney, IAS officers Jayash Ranjan and Santha Sheela Nair were felicitated for their contribution in public service by the advisor to the Prime Minister T K A Nair and Governor of Chattisgarh Shekhar Dutt.

Emphasising on the need to felicitate civil servants, Nair said, "Lack of motivation is the root cause why performances of civil servants are not up to the mark. Recognising merit is the only way to boost idealism and a desire to serve."
