Thiruvananthapuram: Kozhikode district jail superintendent R. Sajan has been suspended in connection with the privileges allegedly enjoyed by the accused in the TPC murder case. It has also come to light that about seven months back the state intelligence wing had given specific input on the chances of the accused getting mobile phones inside the prison.
The suspension followed the recommendation by DGP Prisons Alexander Jacob. P. Ajayakumar, a lecturer at State Institute of Correctional Administration, has been appointed as the new superintendent, home department sources said.
Jacob said that he had recommended the suspension of Sajan as a precaution to avoid interferences in the ongoing probes. The mass transfer of prison officials was also part of strengthening the security of the Kozhikode district prison.
The state police intelligence wing, in a report sent in May, had said that certain instances of smuggling mobile phones into the prisons were reported and that the chances of the murder accused having access to them could not be ruled out.
“We have been carrying out a series of checks in all the prisons even before and after such intelligence reports and had seized phones,” said the DGP Prisons.
