Chennai: Cyclonic storm Madi will intensify, bringing rain or thundershowers over some parts of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh during the next 48 hours, the Indian Meteorological Department said on Saturday. Several parts of the city had showers, forcing motorists to take cover under bridges and flyovers.
The storm, which, on Saturday, was centred over southwest Bay of Bengal, about 520 km east-southeast of Chennai and 440 km northeast of Trinconamalee (Sri Lanka), could bring rain over coastal TN, Puducherry, south coastal Andhra Pradesh and Andaman and Nicobar Islands over the next two days. Fishermen along the Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and south AP coasts have been warned against venturing into the sea, the bulletin said.
“The storm will move in a northerly direction and gain momentum and move away from the Indian mainland. We can expect isolated rainfall in the state and in the city,” said Y.E.A.Raj, deputy director general of meteorology, Regional Meteorological Centre Chennai.
