My government is functioning as per the path shown by MGR, says Jaya.
Chennai: The AIADMK’s victory in the Yercaud (ST) Assembly by-elections showed that the various welfare schemes implemented by her government during the last two-and-a-half years had reached the people, AIADMK supremo and chief minister J. Jayalalithaa has said.
“The AIADMK’s massive victory reflected the recognition given by the voters of Yercaud to the various welfare measures launched by the AIADMK regime,” Jayalalithaa said, while addressing party workers who turned up in large numbers at her Poes Garden residence to greet her on the massive victory at Yercaud.
“My government has been functioning as per the path show by the founder and former chief minister M.G. Ramachandran and initiating various welfare measures to benefit the common man. The voters of Yercaud have expressed their happiness with our good work,” a visibly elated Jayalalithaa added.
The chief minister also thanked the voters of Yercaud, party headquarters functionaries, state ministers, AIADMK workers and leaders of alliance parties for working for the victory of AIADMK candidate P. Saroja.
“The fact that the AIADMK candidate was leading by more than 30,000 votes showed that the AIADMK’s massive victory was ensured,” she added earlier in the day, while reacting to the counting trend from the hill station.
It was celebration time for party workers, as they assembled at the party headquarters and at the chief minister’s residence and celebrated the victory by distributing sweets and bursting crackers. Jayalalithaa also received bouquets from her ministerial colleagues at her residence.
Several senior leaders, including party treasurer and finance minister O. Panneerselvam, distributed sweets to party members and the public.

By-poll fetches laurels to Jaya
Chennai: There had been four by-elections since the AIADMK stormed to power in the 2011 Assembly elections, the latest being in the hill station of Yercaud, about 360 km from here.
This is the by-poll which the party won by the largest margin. The impressive win in Yercaud triggered spontaneous celebrations at the AIADMK headquarters here. Cadres gathered in large numbers, burst crackers and distributed sweets.
Also, people gathered in large numbers in front of the Chief Minister’s Poes Garden residence here and thanked her for the resounding victory in the Yercaud by-elections.
Of the 11 candidates in the fray for the Yercaud (ST) by-election held on December 4, AIADMK’s P. Saroja trounced her rival DMK’s V. Maran (64,655 votes), by securing 1,42,771 votes.
She won by a huge margin of 78,116 votes.
A total of 2,40,290 voters had exercised their franchise through EVMs, that were used for the first time in by-polls. In June last year, AIADMK’s Karthik Thondaiman won the Pudukottai by-election by a large margin of 71,498 votes. Securing 1,01,998 votes, Thondaiman defeated his nearest rival N. Jahir Hussain of DMDK who polled 30,500 votes.
S. Muthuselvi (AIADMK), secured 94,977 votes out of a total 1, 59,772 votes polled on March 18, 2012 Sankarankoil by-elections. She defeated her nearest rival J. Jawahar Suryakumar of the DMK by a good margin of 68,757 votes. He could manage only 26,220 votes.
In October 2011, the AIADMK retained the Tiruchi West Assembly seat with its candidate M. Paranjothi defeating former transport minister K.N. Nehru of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam by a margin of 14,684 votes in the by-election. Paranjothi secured 69,029 votes, against Nehru’s 54,345.
