It is BJP's responsibility to form govt, says AAP; we don't need a character certificate from Rahul Gandhi: Kejriwal

New Delhi/Ghaziabad: With the possibility of President's Rule looming over Delhi, Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal met other leaders of the party to decide the future course of the action.

A day after creating history in Delhi's election, Aam Aadmi Party on Monday maintained that it will not stake claim to form government and will play the role of a constructive opposition. The party also said that it was the responsibility of the BJP, which is the single largest party, to form the government.

After the meeting of top party leaders at party chief Arvind Kejriwal's residence in Ghaziabad, AAP leader Yogendra Yadav said, even if Lt Governor Najeeb Jung invites the party to form the government it will decline such an offer citing lack of majority.

"We are not going to form the government. We will sit in the opposition and play the role of a constructive opposition. As per the Constitution the largest party has to take the responsibility of forming government," Yadav said.

"We have not got majority so it is very surprising that the number one party (BJP) is not ready to form the government and telling us to do so," he said. Yadav also strongly ruled out taking support of Congress to form government.

Earlier, in an interview with NDTV, Kejriwal reiterated the party stand that they will sit in the opposition. "Let the Lieutenant-Governor (Najeeb Jung) decide what happens," he said.

Kejriwal also attacked Rahul Gandhi and Congress saying 'we don't need a character certificate from Rahul Gandhi'.

Rahul, on Sunday, had said that Congress will take lessons from AAP and involve more people in the party. Congress suffered humiliating defeat in all the four states. Rahul's comment makes no difference to me, Kejriwal said in the interview. 

The IITian did not spare BJP too. He accused BJP of approaching AAP candidates but assured that 'none of our members are going to give in.

Kejriwal denied any 'Modi-wave' in Delhi. He reasoned that if it would have been a Modi wave, then why BJP witnessed reduction in vote shares as they have won just six or seven more seats.

"It's the wave of the common man, not of AAP. I would call upon them to gather and show their unity," he said stressing that he was not interested in becoming the Chief Minister or the Prime Minister. Kejriwal added leaders are not entrusted by the party but they emerge from among the common man.

Indicating that the party will soon spread its wings, Kejriwal said, "We are not just a party of Delhi. We have to remove corruption from entire nation," NDTV reported. The show-stealer of Delhi elections also said that politics has made him patient and inclusive as far as people and issues are concerned.

Meanwhile, former police officer and activist Kiran Bedi took it to Twitter on Monday urging the parties to form government in Delhi. "Unfair for Delhi people not to get a stable government & return to polls  again/soon.Onus on both, BJP and APP to provide good governance (sic)," the tweet read.

The BJP has also expressed its reluctance to stake claim, saying it did not have the numbers to provide a stable government.

Speaking to TV channels on Monday, BJP's CM candidate Harsh Vardhan said, "We won't approach anyone for support. We are content to play the role of opposition." Harsh Vardhan had said on Sunday night that he would not stake claim to form a government as his party is short of a clear majority and would prefer to sit in the opposition than indulge in any 'horse trading'.

"...Since I don't have number I cannot stake my claim in forming my government in Delhi...Since I don't have the magic number of 36, I really cannot be a part of the government formation in Delhi," he had said.

BJP with 31 seats has emerged as the single largest party in a House of 70, needing six more for the magic number of 36. AAP bagged 28 seats followed by Congress(8). BJP ally Akali Dal got one seat. Kejriwal emerged the giant killer defeating three-time Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit by a huge margin.
