Bangalore: A gang of around 35 men made a futile attempt to rob copper wire stocked inside the vast NGEF Factory campus on Sunday night.

The police, who rushed to the spot as they were alerted by security guards, fired two rounds in the air to stop the miscreants, who were trying to attack them.

The police said that the armed miscreants entered the NGEF campus, which is spread across 110 acres, near Byappanahalli late on Sunday night.

As they were trying to steal the copper wire inside the campus, the security guards, who noticed it, informed the Byappanahalli police. Around 10 policemen, led by an Assistant Commissioner of Police, rushed to the spot.

“The police asked the miscreants to surrender, but they started throwing stones and bottles at the police. To resist them, the police opened two rounds in the air.

Immediately, the gang of thieves escaped in the dark,” the police explained. “No one was injured in the incident. We are on the lookout for the miscreants and they will be nabbed soon,” the police added.

A source from the police department said that the police did not know how many thieves were on the campus and rushed with a 10-man team. “We did not expect to see 35 miscreants. Only after opening fire could we see all the gang members running to escape from us.

If we had known that such a big gang was involved in the theft, we would have taken a bigger posse of policemen to the spot,” the source revealed. A case has been registered in Byappanahalli police station. Further investigations are on.
