Women rally for their rights in all spheres
Women rights activists in the city on Tuesday took out a rally passage.
Vijayawada: Women rights activists in the city on Tuesday took out a rally passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill in the Winter Session of Parliament.
Hundreds of women activists from the city, including former MP Ch. Vidya and former mayors P. Anuradha, Ch. Ratna Bindu, Mallika Begum and T. Sakuntala formed part of the rally.
Over 10,000 signatures from students of various colleges and women in the city were collected as part of the campaign. These signatures would be sent to the Central government, along with a request to ensure that the Lok Sabha passes the Bill.
Later, the Vasavya Mahila mandali and Women Power Corner and Center for Social Research organised a meeting.
Addressing the gathering, Metropolitan Sessions judge R. Murali said that though women constitute half of the population, they are not represented properly politics and governing bodies.
“The Women’s Reservation Bill will help boost women's presence in all governing bodies,” Justice Murali said.
“At present, the political parties are only concerned about the financial status. Implementation of the 33 per cent reservation in each and every field will help women raise their voice against any injustice they face,” he added.
Former MP Ch. Vidya said that women from all walks are demanding passage of the Bill. Neglecting the Bill is akin to suppressing the rights of women, she said.
CPM city secretary Ch. Babu Rao, Women and Child Welfare department project director Lakshmi Kumari, and women members of various political parties and organisations were present.
