Akhil wins Gold in comeback tournament

Ranchi: Olympian boxer Akhil Kumar returned to competitive boxing in style, winning the light weight (60kg) gold medal at the All India Police Games here by defeating Uttarakhand Police's Rahul Thakur 21-10 in the final today.

The former Commonwealth Games gold-medallist, who made a comeback to the ring at this tournament after having to stay away for almost two years due to injuries, was at his clinical best as he controlled the bout from the word go.

"It wasn't easy. I know maybe it looked like it, but there is so much that needs to be factored in before you draw a conclusion such as this. Thakur fought well, and he is a bright prospect," he said.

"I have worked extremely hard to comeback in the ring with the right frame of mind. I am just glad it went well, and now I am only looking forward to getting back to training and giving it my best every single time as i prepare for future tournaments."

Akhil also praised Haryana Police, his employers, saying, "They have supported so many sportspersons. We get pretty much all that we need at all times and that, for a sportsperson, is a massive thing. I really am thankful towards Haryana Police for being benevolent and supportive at all times."

He also thanked Dronacharya awardee coach Jaydev Bisht for sticking by him durings ome tough times. "Coach Bisht is a tremendous asset for any player and for me he has been there at some very tough times. He has believed a lot in me and that makes a huge difference. Also I want to thank coaches Amreek Singh (weightlifting) and Bhupender (badminton) for all there help.

"I also wish to thank NIS, Patiala, authorities and also the Sports Authority of India (SAI). They have taken extremely good care of me and that has made it possible for me to return, and indeed return stronger. I will be always indebted to them."
