Kozhikode: The police team investigating the use of mobile phones by the accused in the TPC case in the district jail has identified the SIM card owners of the phones recovered from the jail premises. Most of the SIM card holders belonged to Kozhikode and Kannur districts, it is learnt.

The probe team will  question the SIM card owners as well as the shop keepers who sold the cards.  Majority of the nine handsets recovered from the jail premises were used by the TPC killers, sources said.

The MTS phone recovered  was allegedly used by an accused in a robbery case. The police had recovered nine mobile handsets. The probe team  called off searches in the wells of the jail on Friday as no suspicious materials were found.

The police  suspect  that the smart phones allegedly used by the accused  were smuggled out of the jail premises.  The culprits reportedly used the high end Samsung Galaxy series phones before the instruments were smuggled out following  media reports about the use of mobile phones.

The  three-member high-level team appointed by Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrsihnan to probe the happenings in the district jail will visit  the jail in the next  three days.

The team comprised  the home secretary, DGP and jail DGP. The home secretary has sought a report from  Kozhikode City Police Commissioner G. Sparjankumar about the progress  in the investigations.
